What is Cervicitis
Cervicitis refers to the condition where cervix in a woman gets inflamed. If you didn’t know, cervix is the name of the uterus’ lower part that extends around 1” into the vaginal canal. It is a very common gynecological disorder affecting around half of the women at some point or other in their lives.
Any woman, who had at least one sexual encounter in her life and who is experiencing abnormal vaginal discharge or some kind of abdominal pain can be affected by Cervicitis. It is not easy to diagnose this condition, as its symptoms can be easily confused with symptoms from other ailments including vaginitis. Untreated Cervicitis can make it difficult to conceive or deliver a baby. However, it is not difficult to diagnose this condition and the treatment is also not much difficult.
Cervicitis can result because of an infection or injury caused by different reasons such as chemicals in contraceptives. An unusual vaginal discharge becoming more pronounced immediately after your menstrual period is likely to be the very first symptom of this condition. Some other symptoms associated with this disorder are itching, bleeding, irritation in external genitals, burning sensation during urination, pain in lower back or pain during intercourse.
There are no symptoms visible if infection is mild. However, if it gets too intense you may notice several unpleasant symptoms including a profuse and pus like discharge with a nasty odor that is accompanied with extreme vaginal itchiness and abdominal pain. In some cases, it can also cause nausea and fever.
If the condition prolongs for a long time, it can make it difficult, if not impossible, to conceive. Even if a woman with Cervicitis is able to conceive, yet she is at high risk of other many problems like a miscarriage or a premature delivery; it can even infect the baby during delivery time and cause pneumonia or severe eye infection.
If you are experiencing an out of normal vaginal discharge or abdominal pain, it is important to consult your physician to get the condition correctly diagnosed. To diagnose cervicitis, your doctor will do a pelvic examination as well as go through your clinical history. It is typical to perform the pap smear & culture for causative organisms.
Antibiotics are usually prescribed to treat the condition. However, if it happens to be a prolonged cervicitis, you may be recommended a procedure that involves destroying all the abnormal cells present on the cervix’s surface.
